GULF SHORES, Ala. — Pearl River volleyball capped an incredible run at the Alabama Gulf Coast Classic on Saturday, defeating Gadsden State 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 22-25, 25-20) and United States Sports University 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-16) to finish the weekend a perfect 4-0.
"The girls created such a good vibe all weekend," head coach Haley Chatham said. "They played fearless and never got rattled — we love to see that. We had players step into new positions and they killed it. Everyone did a great job of balancing each other out and lifting each other up. They played at a high level all weekend and we are so proud of that."
Pearl River (18-7 overall) opened the day with a hard-fought win over Gadsden State (13-11). The Wildcats trailed 23-22 late in the opening set but strung together three straight points to win 25-23.
The second set was all PRCC, as the Wildcats built a nine-point cushion at 16-7 and never looked back. A pair of aces from Avery Wheat (Gonzales, La.; East Ascension) and three from Jordyn Wilks (Hammond, La.; Hammond Magnet) helped seal a 25-16 win.
The Cardinals fought back to take the third set 25-22, but Pearl River answered in the fourth. Middle blockers Regan Ziegler (Lacombe, La.; Lakeshore) and Morgan Mears (Hurley; East Central) combined for double-digit kills to power the Wildcats to a 25-20 victory and the match.
In the nightcap, PRCC cruised past United States Sports University (1-16). Using new rotations and players in different roles, the Wildcats controlled all three sets by identical margins, 25-17, 25-16, 25-16.
