PRCC standout Turner signs with William Carey to continue career

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River softball recently saw one of its leaders take the next step in continuing her college softball career.

Catcher Mary Grace Turner (Leakesville; Greene County) signed with William Carey on March 23.

"I try not to think too much about it because I'm in the middle of the season right now, but it does feel good to know that I'm wanted by another school," Turner said. "Coach (Leigh) White did a great job of making me feel wanted here at Pearl River, so when I got that feeling from William Carey it felt like the right place to be."

The Greene County product is in the middle of a standout sophomore campaign.

Turner currently holds a .358 batting average and not only does she lead the team in home runs with six and RBIs with 18, but she's also 19th nationally in homers.

Turner has proven herself to be one of the leaders in the program, whether it's in the batter's box, in the dugout or off the field.

"I'm very excited for her. She's a player you can tell is all in," White said. "She's our biggest cheerleader when she's in the dugout and she's our quarterback when she's behind the plate and the kids listen to her. She'd run through a fence if I asked her to and that's the type of player that you want."

Turner reflected on some of the great times she has experienced while at PRCC.

"This has definitely been a fun run," Turner said. "We've had our ups and downs but there's no place I'd rather play than Pearl River. This is a great place to be."

Turner is the second current Lady Wildcat to sign at the next level. Pitcher Dallas Blaker (Bay St. Louis; Our Lady Academy) signed with Belhaven during the early signing period. First baseman Elizabeth Taggard (Picayune) has verbally committed to Belhaven as well.
