POPLARVILLE, Miss — The No. 16 Pearl River women's soccer team struck first in Friday's showdown but couldn't hold off a second half surge from No. 11 Jones College, falling 2-1 in a fierce rivalry clash.
"I think the girls worked extremely hard tonight," head coach Henrik Madsen said. "We got a bit unlucky, but you could say the same for Jones. Both teams hit the post a couple times — a fair result would have been 5-4 for either team.
"It's a rivalry and it's always going to be tough. We've just got to regroup and get ready for the next game."
The action started early as a Jones College (6-1-2 overall; 3-0-1 MACCC) attacker fired a shot on target the 10-minute mark, but goalkeeper Josie Davis (Poplarville) came up big with a full-stretch, diving save to keep the match scoreless.
The Wildcats (6-2; 2-2) got the scoring started in the 27th minute when Addy Grace Alexander (Poplarville) sliced through the defense and fired a shot past the diving goalkeeper, giving Pearl River the 1-0 lead.
Jones tied the game in chaotic fashion, capitalizing on a scramble in the box that ended with a Pearl River defender accidentally deflecting the ball into their own net.
The final goal of the match came in the 65th minute when Jones drove down the field and fired a shot across the box and into the net to take a 2-1 lead. The Wildcats battled until the final whistle, pushing for an equalizer before ultimately falling short.
