COLUMBUS, Miss — The Pearl River women's golf team earned its best finish of the year, placing second at the EMCC Women's Fall Invitational after shooting 259 over par.
ROUND ONE
Pearl River sent eight golfers to Columbus to compete in the recent tournament at Lion Hills Center and Golf Course. PRCC came out strong in the opening round, carding a team score of 123 over par to secure second place in the standings after the first day of play.
Sophomore Maya Morelos (Grambling, La.; Ruston) led the way for the Wildcats on day one, shooting a 96 that included an impressive 47 on the challenging back nine. Close behind was Berklie Dunn (Mobile, Ala.; Faith Academy), who finished with a 98 and matched the team's low score on the back nine with a 47 of her own.
Next in line for the Wildcats was freshman Abi Beth Ford (Purvis), who turned in a 106 highlighted by a steady 52 on the front nine. Following close behind was Abby Futch (Gulfport; St. Patrick), who started strong with a front-nine 50 before finishing her round with a 111 overall.
Rounding out the Wildcats' team lineup was Savannah Madigan (Long Beach), who shot a 127 in the opening round. Her best stretch came on the front nine, where she carded a 63.
Representing the Wildcats as individual competitors were three freshmen: Eva Ward (Columbus), Emery Fildes (Slidell, La.), and Laura Smith (Sumrall). Ward led the group, closing out her round with a strong 62 on the back nine to finish at 126 overall.
Fildes and Smith rounded out PRCC's individual competitors, each finishing the opening round with a 129. Fildes got off to a fast start, posting a 66 on the front nine, while Smith showed steady play, shooting 64 on the front nine and 65 on the back.
ROUND TWO
On day two, the Wildcats combined for a team score of 136 over par, maintaining their hold on second place in the tournament standings.
Morelos once again led the Wildcats on day two, improving on her opening-round score with a 95 that included a team-low 46 on the front nine. Dunn paced the team on the back nine, matching her first-day 47 on the way to a 100 for the round.
Coming in third for Pearl River in round two was Futch, who carded a 53-54 to finish with a 107. Following her was Ford, who posted a 59 on the front nine en route to a 122. Rounding out the team lineup, not counting as an individual, was Madigan, who finished with a 129.
Ward once again led the Wildcats' individual competitors, finishing day two with a 123. Fildes followed with a back-nine 62, closing out her round at 126, while Smith rounded out Pearl River's individuals, carding a 131 that included a back-nine 62.
