GOODMAN, Miss. — Jahanna Wilson continued her terrific start to conference play Thursday night, scoring 31 points and helping Pearl River women's basketball secure a 69-39 road victory over Holmes.
Wilson is now averaging 22.3 points per game in MACCC play.
"In the second half, we switched from man to zone, and our team really bought into the game plan," head coach Shanae Govan-Williams said. "When we can defend, and everyone is moving on the flight of the basketball, that's when we're playing our best basketball because it makes things easier on the offensive end."
Toniah Watts (Terry) opened the scoring for Pearl River (11-4 Overall; 4-0 MACCC) with a layup, igniting a 9-0 run to start the game against Holmes (10-5; 2-2). The Bulldogs ended the run with a 3-pointer, but Jahanna Wilson (Jackson; Callaway) quickly answered with a three of her own. That basket sparked another 9-0 run for the Wildcats before Holmes connected from beyond the arc as the first quarter came to a close. Pearl River finished the opening period ahead 18-6, with Wilson leading all scorers with eight points.
Wilson stayed hot to begin the second quarter, scoring the first two baskets on fast-break layups following steals. Jae'la Smith (Vicksburg, Porter's Chapel) added a layup of her own as the Wildcats put together their third run of six or more points in the first half. Pearl River went into halftime holding a 32-21 lead.
Cy'Nara Robinson (McGehee, Ark.) started the second half with a steal and a layup, followed by jump shots from Aubrey Hill (Tupelo, Biloxi) and Wilson to extend the Wildcat advantage to 38-23. Pearl River maintained a 15-point lead for much of the quarter until Robinson knocked down a 3-pointer. Wilson then added two more baskets to reach 23 points, and Alana Smith (Southhaven) capped the scoring with free throws to give the Wildcats a 52-32 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Holmes opened the fourth quarter with a layup, but Pearl River responded by heating up from beyond the arc, draining three consecutive 3-pointers to push the lead to 61-38. Jae'la Smith followed with a long jumper, and layups from Chauncey Dixon (Leroy, Ala.; McIntosh) and Ganae McAllister (Tupelo) extended the margin to 67-39.
Pearl River closed out the game strong, securing a dominant 69-39 victory.
LEADING THE WAY
Wilson delivered the first 30-point performance for the Wildcats this season, doing so efficiently, shooting 11-for-16 from the field and 5-for-8 from beyond the arc.
"Since her game at Mississippi Delta, I think we've unlocked something with her," Govan-Williams said. "She's confident and feeling it. It makes us better when she is confident and shooting the ball like she has been shooting it, as well as being our floor general."
Dixon was the leading rebounder in the contest, bringing in eight rebounds as well as scoring six points. Robinson was next in line, bringing in six rebounds and scoring nine points.
