PERKINSTON, Miss. — The No. 8 Pearl River men's soccer team generated some chances Friday night in a nationally-ranked clash with No. 12 Gulf Coast but couldn't find the net, falling 2-0.
Pearl River (1-1 overall) was active from the start, with Julian van Rijsdam (Badehoevedorp, Netherlands) whipping a dangerous cross into the box that was caught by the Gulf Coast (3-0) goalkeeper. Tycho van Haaren (Doetinchem, Netherlands) tested the goalkeeper a few times throughout the half, while Emil Corfitzen (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Zach Howard (Biloxi) also added some chances.
Despite the Wildcat pressure, MGCCC struck first in the 37th minute to go ahead 1-0. The Wildcats nearly found an equalizer before halftime as Camden Hayes (Ocean Springs) rose for a header, but the Bulldog goalkeeper made a stellar save to preserve the advantage.
Pearl River continued to push after the break. Corfitzen peppered in a few more chances, Arthur Thygesen (Aarhus, Denmark) sent a header off the post and van Rijsdam had a near miss on a one-versus-one opportunity.
Gulf Coast added a second goal in the 72nd minute and held on despite Pearl River's chances.
