Tubb leads Pearl River to first top-five finish since 2023

Tubb leads Pearl River to first top-five finish since 2023

LAUREL, Miss. —The Pearl River men's golf team had a tournament to remember at the Bobcat Invitational Monday and Tuesday at Laurel Country Club.

Freshman Seth Tubb (Hattiesburg; Presbyterian Christian) finished tied for third for the program's best individual showing since its reinstatement while simultaneously leading the program to its first top five finish as a team since March 7, 2023, when they competed at the East Central Invitational.

"That's the first time we've had a top three individual finish since the men's program was reinstated," Coach Coby Scarborough said. "That's a great start for us. We are moving in the right direction, and I expect us to keep moving that way. I expect greater things to come from the men's golf program."

Pearl River finished the tournament at 82-over par, shooting 49-over in the first round and 33 over in the second. The Wildcats recorded 77 pars, the third-most in the field, and NINE birdies, ranking sixth overall.

"We didn't play our best, but we were able to compete and stay true to ourselves, and it was good to finish in the top five," Coach Scarborough said. "After day one, considering the work the guys put in throughout the semester — and it being the last tournament of the semester — it was good to be in that position."

Tubb began his historic round with a birdie on the par-5 10th hole. The freshman went on to play the par-5s three under par—the best mark in the 61-man field. He shot 78 in both rounds on his way to a third-place finish, capping a season-best 12-over total.

"I was definitely proud of the way he played," Coach Scarborough said. "He competed for two days, earned all-tournament team honors with a top-three finish, and was just two shots out of the top spot."

Riley Barnett (Lakeville, Minn.; Lakeville South) was next for the Wildcats, finishing 20 over par and placing 18th overall. He carded a birdie on the par-3 15th and tied for 11th in the tournament with 17 pars over two rounds, posting scores of 11 over on day one and 9 over on day two.

Jeremiah Cochran (Gautier; Covenant Christian Academy) was third for Pearl River, improving his score by nine strokes from day one to day two. He averaged 3.38 strokes on par-3 holes, ranking sixth in the tournament, and was the only competitor to birdie the par-4 2nd hole in the second round.

William Dickerson (Gautier) finished fourth for the Wildcats at 26-over par, shooting 16-over on day one and 10-over on day two. He tied Barnett with 17 pars over the two-day tournament.

"I'm proud of Jeremiah Cochran — he shot an 89 on the first day and then came back with an 80 on the second," Coach Scarborough said. "Will Dickerson shot an 88 and then an 82, and Riley Barnett was consistent as well, shooting an 83 and an 81.

"All the guys put in the time and effort. They've been grinding all semester, and it was a great way to finish our fall season. We're looking forward to the spring, and we've got some momentum going into that now. We'll see where we can finish in conference play and at regionals."

Rounding out the rotation for PRCC was Preston Leggett (Laurel; West Jones), who finished 34-over par with rounds of 88 and 90. The sophomore recorded one birdie in round one, carding a four on the par-5 17th.

Competing as an individual for Pearl River, freshman Joshua Glass finished 58th overall. He opened the tournament with a 98 before improving five strokes to a 93 in the second round.

"Their main focus was to finish in the top five — that was their goal," coach Coby Scarborough said. "Of course, we want to win a tournament, but we've got to start small and take baby steps. After day one, they said, 'Coach, we've got this. We're going to be top five and finish the semester on a high note.' And they did."
