ELLISVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River men's basketball's season came to a close Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats fell 89-74 to Jones College in the Region 23 Quarterfinals.
Pearl River (18-13) and Jones College (22-9) traded baskets early. Daijon Leatherman (Slidell, La.; Legacy School of Sports and Sciences) opened the scoring with a bucket inside, Kamarian Mayfield (Waynesboro; Quitman) drilled a long jumper, Christian Gilliland (Memphis, Tenn.; ABC Prep) added a layup and Mayfield scored again as the teams were tied at 8-8.
After falling behind 14-9, Reece Garrison (Olive Branch) drove in for a layup and Kelan Rich (Pascagoula) knocked down a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer to trim the deficit to 16-14.
Pearl River attempted to keep things close as the first half wore on, but the Bobcats gradually built separation and took a commanding 48-26 lead into the halftime break.
The Wildcats showed fight in the second half, outscoring the Bobcats 48-41, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome as Jones secured the 89-74 victory.
