PRCC basketball standouts earn postseason honors

POPLARVILLE – Three basketball players for Pearl River Community College have earned postseason honors from the MACJC and the NJCAA.

 

Freshman Eric Thornton (Jackson) was named to the All-Region 23 Team by the NJCAA. Lady Wildcat sophomore Charisma Walker (Brandon) was named a second-team All-State selection by the MACJC, and sophomore Tyasia Willis (Camden) earned All-State honorable mention.

 

Thornton, a 6-foot-3 guard from Murrah High School, led the state in scoring with 19.2 points per game.

 

He also led the Wildcats in rebounding with 6.4 and had 3.4 assists per game, leading the 23-5 Wildcats to the MACJC State Tournament championship and the Region 23 Tournament final.

 

Walker, a 5-foot-10 forward, averaged 10.5 points and 8.4 rebounds for PRCC this past season. Willis, who prepped at Velma Jackson, led the Lady Wildcats with 9.1 rebounds per game, and she also averaged 9.3 points per game.

 

The men's All-State Team has not been announced.

 

Mallett, Willis chosen for All-Star Game

 

Wildcat sophomore Rodney Mallett (Lexington) and Lady Wildcats forward Tyasia Willis have been selected for the annual MACJC All-Star Game, scheduled for April 13 at East Central Community College in Decatur.

 

Mallett, a 6-foot-1 guard from Holmes County Central, averaged 6.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. As a freshman, he averaged 9.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.    

 

The game brings together sophomore players from each team in the state in a showcase opportunity. The women's game will tip off at 5 p.m. and the men will start at approximately 7 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students.

 

High school all-stars to play at PRCC

 

Pearl River will host the third annual PRCC High School Basketball All-Star Games April 10 at Marvin R. White Coliseum.

 

The game brings together some of the top prep stars from the college's six-county district (Forrest, Hancock, Jefferson Davis, Lamar and Marion), as well as players from surrounding area schools.

 

The Girls Underclass (juniors and younger) game tips off at 5 p.m., with the Boys Underclass (juniors and younger) scheduled for a 6 p.m. start. The Senior Girls game is set to begin at 7 p.m., with the Senior Boys starting at approximately 8 p.m.

 

Admission is $8 and concessions will be available for purchase.
