POPLARVILLE — Five Pearl River Wildcats have been honored by the MACJC, the league announced Monday.
Offensive lineman Ivory Scott (Kenner, La.; Bonnabel) and defensive back Kyron Norwood (Hattiesburg; Forrest County AHS) were named to the MACJC's first team, with receiver Tyler Polk (St. Martin), defensive lineman Gi'Narious Johnson (Gulfport) and kicker/punter Will Lang (Inverness; Indianola Academy) earning spots on the MACJC's second team.
The selections were voted on by the league's coaches.
MACJC FIRST TEAM
The 6-foot-4, 315-pound Scott was considered one of the nation's top returning linemen heading into the season and he proved why as a sophomore. Scott was a reliable pass protector as well as a powerful run blocker for the Wildcats. He also provided leadership and stability along the line. The Louisiana native verbally committed to Arkansas State during the season.
Norwood emerged as a leader in the defensive secondary. The sophomore set career highs in just about every category in 2018. Norwood recorded 54 tackles (43 solo), 1.5 sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss, four pass breakups and also recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass. He saved his best performance for last, racking up nine tackles, 1.5 sacks and 3.5 TFLs in PRCC's 24-21 overtime winner at Mississippi Delta. Norwood finished his two seasons at PRCC with 93 total tackles.
MACJC SECOND TEAM
Johnson burst onto the scene in his college debut against Itawamba. The former Gulfport Admiral recorded a season high nine tackles with one TFL, one forced fumble and two pass breakups. The 6-foot-1, 280-pound Johnson finished the year with 46 tackles, 3.5 TFLs, one forced fumble and three pass breakups.
Thrust into a multi-purpose role as a sophomore, Lang was a two-time MACJC Special Teams Player of the Week selection for the Wildcats. Lang ended up converting 5 of 9 field goal attempts with a long of 39 yards, made 11 of 14 extra-point attempts and finished with 26 points. He also punted 46 times for 1,465 yards and a 41.8 average and handled kickoff duties. One of the highlights of the season came in the finale when Lang kicked a 29-yard field goal in overtime to topple MDCC 24-21.
Polk proved to be a threat in the passing attack and returning kicks. The St. Martin product was among the nation's top receivers, ranking 38thin receptions with 34 and 46thin yards with 446. He also caught three touchdown passes and returned seven kicks for 214 yards. Polk finished his PRCC career with 58 receptions for 748 yards and four touchdowns.
