POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River shortstop Wiley Cleland (Columbia; Columbia Academy) has been named the MACJC Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Cleland is the fourth Wildcat to be honored by the MACJC, joining Shemar Page (Raleigh), Miles Smith (Laurel; Northeast Jones) and Reece Ewing (Mobile, Ala.; Faith Academy). Page also earned the NJCAA Division II Player of the Week honor following his Week 2 performance.
The honor comes on the heels of another standout week for the Louisiana-Monroe signee.
During No. 6 PRCC's 4-0 week — with sweeps at Southwest and at home against East Mississippi — Cleland hit .538 (7-for-13) with a .625 on-base percentage and 1.000 slugging percentage. His 1.625 OPS was tops on the squad.
In the four games, Cleland racked up three doubles, one home run, six RBIs and six runs scored. He also worked three walks.
The sophomore was equally strong in the field, recording 10 assists and two putouts without committing an error.
Cleland has been one of Pearl River's more reliable bats this year, hitting .371 with a .512 OBP that's tops among regulars. His .712 slugging percentage is tops as well. In 37 games, Cleland also leads PRCC with 15 doubles and 45 RBIs. His 10 homers are tied for second on the team and 11thnationally among D-II hitters.
