POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Jimmy Cuyler's path to Pearl River Community College wasn't supposed to happen, but it ultimately changed his life.
Three decades after helping lead the Wildcats to a conference championship, Cuyler will officially be inducted into the Pearl River Community College Athletics Hall of Fame, presented by Keith's Superstores, on July 31.
Cuyler joins a prestigious class that features football's Donald Bridges, softball's Judy Barber and baseball's Jered Salazar. The 2026 Spirit of a Wildcat Award recipient is Robert "Scooter" Parris. PRCC also plans to recognize the 2005 MACJC Champion Pearl River football and women's soccer teams. Tickets for the banquet are available now and can be purchased at PRCCAthletics.com/HOFTickets. The deadline to purchase is July 17.
"I said, 'Thank you, God,' and it brought the biggest smile," Cuyler said. "I immediately called all of my teammates. This honor means the world to me."
BEFORE THE RIVER
Cuyler's path to Pearl River began at Prentiss High School. Standing at 6-foot-5, he initially gave football a shot, but one big hit quickly changed his mind.
"I tried football, but they put me to sleep one time on the field and I decided that was enough," Cuyler said with a laugh. "I met John Ishee, and he said I should come try basketball. I got moved from the eighth-grade team to the ninth-grade team. Then it sort of became my team, and the rest was history."
Cuyler blossomed into one of Mississippi's top prep players, eventually earning a McDonald's All-America nomination. He signed with Arkansas, but NCAA testing requirements prevented him from joining the Razorbacks, turning what was the SEC program's loss into Pearl River's gain.
The setback led his mother, Rose, and his uncle, Reggie, to encourage him to pursue the junior college route.
"My mom said, 'You know that Mr. Mathis is calling you all the time. Go for it, Jimmy,'" Cuyler said. "She and my Uncle Reggie were the two main reasons I decided to go to Pearl River. Uncle Reggie told me I could go help put Pearl River on the map."
He embraced that challenge the moment he arrived in Poplarville.
BECOMING A WILDCAT
When Cuyler first stepped onto Pearl River's campus, something immediately felt different.
"It was a much different campus at the time, so I just remember the open space. I love country views," Cuyler said. "When you parked at the student center, you could just see the gym. When I saw it, I fell in love."
When the 1993-94 season began, things didn't start the way Cuyler had envisioned. He came off the bench through the first five games of the season, using the disappointment as motivation by training alone after hours so campus police wouldn't kick him out of the gym.
"I sat the bench for my first five games and I wasn't really happy about it," he said. "I used to sneak in the gym at night, hold 10-pound weights and run the bleachers. I used to get shots up in the dark because curfew was at 11 p.m., and security would be called if they saw me."
His opportunity arrived when a teammate suffered an injury, and Cuyler seized it immediately. His first collegiate points came on an emphatic putback dunk against Faulkner State. He finished with 17 points that night and never came off the bench again.
The Wildcats finished the season 21-10 before falling to Northeast in the postseason. Cuyler averaged 12 points and seven rebounds during his freshman campaign.
WINNING A TITLE
After falling short in the Final Four as a freshman, Cuyler and fellow Pearl River Athletics Hall of Famer Conley Verdun took the loss personally, spending the entire offseason preparing for another run.
"When you get that close and fail, it hurts," he said. "If it doesn't hurt, then I don't want to play with you."
Cuyler helped Pearl River put together another outstanding season in 1994-95, earning a return trip to the conference tournament. When postseason play arrived, he elevated his game, averaging 25 points per contest throughout the tournament.
That run set up a highly anticipated Final Four rematch with Northeast. Motivated by the previous season's defeat, Cuyler came out firing, knocking down his first five 3-point attempts before finishing with 32 points and 10 rebounds to eliminate the Tigers.
The Wildcats then defeated Copiah-Lincoln to capture the MACJC Championship, ending a 30-year title drought.
"It was a blessing," Cuyler said. "it was the best thing we could have hoped for because no one believed in us."
Not only did the Wildcats go out on top, but when the All-MACJC awards were announced, Cuyler earned a place on the teams.
LIFE AFTER THE RIVER
Following his standout career in Poplarville, Cuyler transferred to the University of West Georgia. After suffering a significant injury, he nearly stepped away from basketball altogether before legendary William Carey coach Steve Knight convinced him to finish his collegiate career as a Crusader.
From there, Cuyler took his game overseas, playing professionally in Germany for two and a half years.
When his playing career ended, he returned to Pearl River as an assistant coach, helping lead the Wildcats to another conference championship in 2003.
Following his coaching stint at PRCC, Cuyler followed friend and future NBA star Al Jefferson to Massachusetts. He has remained there ever since, spending time coaching at Lawrence High School before accepting his current position at Northern Essex Community College.
Now entering his fourth season at Northern Essex, Cuyler helped guide the Knights to the NJCAA Division III National Championship in 2025-26.
For Cuyler, the Hall of Fame honor serves as a reminder that one unexpected detour ultimately led him exactly where he was meant to be.
"It means everything," Cuyler said. "Pearl River changed my life."
