ELLISVILLE — The Pearl River Lady Wildcats saw their season come to an end Saturday night, falling to Jones College 6-0.
PRCC lost in the state semifinals to rival Jones after beating Itawamba in the first round of the playoffs.
Assistant coach Tom Keen, who was filling in for head coach Jack Byrd, thought the Lady Wildcats played well in the first half but were unable to keep pace in the latter half of the contest.
"I thought the first 30 minutes we did really well," he said. "We settled the game down well and we gave ourselves a couple of chances.
"Jones really played a really good game. I'm very proud of our girls though. They played hard."
Mikayla Banks scored a hat trick to lead JC (12-2). Aimee Durn, Esmeralda Figueroa and Rachel Barnaby also scored for the Lady Bobcats.
Byrd was also proud of the season his squad played and wanted to thank his Lady Wildcats (8-8-1) for their resiliency this year.
"In the first two games of the season we got outscored 9-1 and a lot of people thought we did not even have a chance to make the playoffs," he said. "I felt like this team had to battle back through some belief issues and that is tough but they battled through the adversity."
Byrd choked up as he continued to reflect on the year as a whole and look ahead.
"I can say without a shadow of a doubt the future is very bright," he said. "Our coaching staff's job is to be bigger than the wins and losses; it's about giving these girls a positive college experience here at PRCC and I thought we did that."
