Pearl River announces summer showcase

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River's softball program is hosting a summer showcase for unsigned high school athletes.

The Wildcat staff will welcome rising high school freshmen to graduated seniors to Wildcat Stadium on July 11. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the clinic will run from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Following a lunch break, games will commence at 2:30 p.m.

During the clinic, athletes will be tested on home-to-first and around-the-bases sprint speed, catcher pop times and pitcher velocity and spin rates.

Participants are asked to bring their own softball gear.

"Everyone should come with a passion and desire to show their talents," Pearl River coach Christie Meeks said. "We are ready to meet some future Wildcats."

To register, visit Pre-registration is discounted at $50, while walk-up participants will pay $60.

Meeks recently announced the creation of a Diamond Crew, which is a student-led support group for the program.

Members of the Diamond Crew will play a massive role in the program's success next spring. Responsibilities will mostly be related to game days, as the Diamond Crew members will help with concessions, welcome fans to Wildcat Stadium, operate the scoreboard, possibly film games and much more. The Diamond Crew will also be registered in the spring softball class, have free admission to home games and receive other perks.

The Wildcats created a virtual clinic series for softball players who are looking to improve their game despite COVID-19 restrictions.

The videos — which are available to any athlete or coach who wants to get an edge — will hit on the three main parts of the game: Pitching, hitting and catching.

Each 20-minute instructional video is $30.
