GOODMAN, Miss. — It was a tale of two games Wednesday night when the Pearl River Lady Wildcats took on the Holmes Lady Bulldogs on the road in Goodman.
The Lady Wildcats split with Holmes, losing the first game 10-6 but won the second game 10-2 in five innings.
"I thought we beat ourselves in the first game but in the second game we came out and played to our potential," PRCC coach Leigh White said.
GAME 1: HOLMES 10, PRCC 6
Holmes got off to a hot start in the first game of the doubleheader plating six runs in the bottom of the first inning.
The Lady Wildcats (15-17 overall, 5-11 MACJC) answered back in the top of the second inning when Mary Grace Turner (Leakesville; Greene County) hit a two-run shot to cut the Lady Bulldog lead to four.
Holmes (10-27 overall, 6-12 MACJC) answered back with a home run of its own in the bottom of the second inning with a solo shot out of center field.
Elizabeth Taggard (Picayune) responded to that with another two-run home run for the Lady Wildcats, making it a 7-4 ball game.
Holmes added to their lead in scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 10-4 lead.
The Lady Wildcats scored the last two runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning when Hannah Rasberry (Lucedale; George County) and Brooke Fagan (Kiln; Hancock) hit back to back RBI singles to cut the Holmes lead to four again.
The Lady Wildcats couldn't continue the rally, however, dropping the game 10-6.
Taggard, Turner and Fagan all led the team in hits with two each while Taggard and Turner also led the team in RBIs with two as well.
GAME 2: PRCC 10, HOLMES 2 (5 inn.)
Alyssa Pinero (Picayune) hit a two-run single in the top of the second inning giving PRCC a 2-0 lead.
Fagan added to the lead in the top of the third inning with a solo shot out of left field.
The Lady Wildcats added to their lead again in the top of the fourth inning when Shelby Gehrmann (D'Iberville) hit an RBI triple and Fagan hit an RBI fly out to give the Lady Wildcats a 5-0 lead.
The Lady Wildcats finally gave up a run in the top of the fourth inning.
The top of the fifth inning saw PRCC really break the game open.
Turner got things started with an RBI double.
Jada Walker (Lizana; West Harrison) followed that with a two-run double.
Gehrmann scored the last run of the game for the Lady Wildcats with an RBI single to give PRCC a 10-2 lead.
Holmes plated one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning before being run ruled.
"They saw the ball a lot better in this game and they were more aggressive at the plate," White said. "I like how we adjusted."
Pinero led the team in hits with three while Gehrmann led the team in RBIs with three.
Grace Stringer (Moselle; South Jones) picked up the win for the Lady Wildcats, she pitched the entire game.
"Grace did a good job, she did well in the circle," White said. "She gave us a chance to win and the girls just got behind her."
Stringer pitching five innings allowing two hits, three walks and two earned runs while striking out two.
The Lady Wildcats return home Friday when they take on Coahoma in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
