POPLARVILLE — The Pearl River defense did something no other team has done Saturday, but it wasn't quite enough as the Wildcats fell to Gulf Coast 30-7 at Dobie Holden Stadium.
Entering the Homecoming matchup, MGCCC had thrown just two interceptions between Chance Lovertich and Lowell Narcisse. Saturday, the Wildcats (1-7, 1-5 MACJC South) picked off three passes — with a fourth called back because of an offsides penalty.
"I thought we played really well on defense, especially when it got tight," PRCC coach Ted Egger said.
Gulf Coast (6-2, 3-2) held a 14-0 advantage going into halftime despite red zone interceptions by Reggie Williams (Hattiesburg) and Cory Jackson (Jackson; Madison-Ridgeland Academy) — and a third by Darrell Luter (Hattiesburg) that was nullified.
The Wildcats' third interception — off Narcisse, an LSU transfer — was batted by a PRCC lineman and snatched inches above the ground by Ron Baker (Prentiss; Jefferson Davis). The defensive back returned it all the way down to Gulf Coast's 5. Two plays later Jesse Pernell (Poplarville) plunged into the end zone for a 3-yard score to pull PRCC within 13, 20-7.
MGCCC converted a field goal and then tacked on a mop up touchdown in the final minutes to complete the scoring.
Tavis Williams (Gulfport; Harrison Central) led PRCC with 78 yards passing. Ron Thompson (Bassfield) rushed for 81 on 16 carries. Tyler Polk led PRCC with 47 yards receiving on four catches — with 38 coming on a big third-and-long late in the third that looked like it might help get the Wildcats back within striking distance.
Lovertich led MGCCC with 226 yards passing. He threw two touchdowns on an 8-yard pass to Omni Wells and a 4-yard pass to Sedevyn Gray. Terrion Avery scored on a 1-yard run to open the game's scoring and finished with 76 yards on 19 carries. Austin Bolton scored on a 4-yard run and finished with 61 yards on 12 carries.
The Wildcats will conclude the 2018 season next Saturday at Delta. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m.
